Michelle and Michael Get Married at The Carolina Inn!

Michelle and Michael selected the beautiful Bryan Courtyard at the Carolina Inn for their wedding. It is such a beautiful setting and my third Saturday wedding there in a row! Michael and Michelle are a very special couple. They are careful planners and knew exactly what they wanted. Michael's daughter, Bella, age 9, was just as excited as they were about this wedding! The wedding took place on April 17, 2010 at noon. The day had a slight chance for rain in the forecast but it did not happen. Just as the ceremony began the sun poked its head out and the weather, although breezy (forget the hairdo!), was very pleasant for this wedding.

Michelle was escorted in by her parents: Rick in his Marine Corps dress protocol, and Yumi in her pretty blue which was the color scheme of the day. Look at Michelle's gorgeous wedding gown! Behind them you can see our wedding director, Rachel Hamm with Bliss by Sam, and our DJ, Jeff Simpson with Simpsound.

Here I am addressing Bella and telling her how important she is in the marriage celebrated today. Michael presented her with a special necklace to commemorate the day and put it on her. She needed my hankie to wipe all her tears. So sweet! She was their only attendant. They also honored their parents with a special tribute to them.
Cynthia, Michelle's sister, and Lisa, Michael's sister, alternated reading verses of a poem by William Jay Smith that begins with "Now touch the air softly..." They did a great job!

Michael and Michelle are so much in love. It radiates all over them and out to everyone else. It was truly a joyous day for all of us to see them get married. Thanks to Craig Carpenter of Luster Studios for this photo and the one of The KISS!
Finally the pronouncement of marriage. You can see the wind started blowing!
I told Michael and Michelle at the rehearsal to make the kiss long enough for our photographer to get a good shot, and they did and he did!
And out they go! The wedding party gathers in the sunroom behind the courtyard while the guests go for cocktails and refreshments in the Old Well Gallery.
We did a few shots re-creating the ceremony. Bella is much more at ease now and so happy! I can tell she really is so happy to have Michelle for her stepmom!

Michael and Michelle, it was such an honor officiating your lovely wedding. I know you two will be superbly happy together as a couple and as a family with Bella and any future children you will have. All the best to you!

Our Vendors:

Of course the Carolina Inn for their lovely property and super-efficient staff.

I thank Jeff Simpson, our DJ of Simpsound Productions, for referring this wonderful couple to me! He is also a great DJ and lighting expert. We have enjoyed doing many wedding together all over the Triangle and surrounding areas.

Rachel Hamm of Bliss by Sam and her intern, LaShayla, did a marvelous job of organizing and expertly directing this wedding ceremony and reception. It was great working with these professionals.

Craig Carpenter of Luster Studios was hard at work creating his wonderful photographs. I am looking forward to seeing them on his blog (they are up now) and he may send me a few to post here too. (Post note: he did. Thanks, Craig!)  Michael and Michelle chose to do the "First Look" where the photographer stages a private meeting of the bride and groom before the ceremony. I think this custom is such a grand idea and that it will become more and more popular. I don't think it detracts from the groom first seeing the bride come down the aisle at all. I saw the First Look photos Craig got of another couple I married at the Washington-Duke Inn, and he beautifully captured the essence of the bride and groom.

Edible Art created this lovely cake.

The Eight Wedding Officiants to Avoid

I came across a blog tonight with an article with the title above and found it quite interesting and thought my followers might be interested in reading this! Here is the link to the original article. I have found that many couples "price shop" for an officiant and may end up hiring one of these "undesirables" just because they charge less to officiate a wedding. It is far better to choose your officiant based on how easily you can relate to her and one who respects your values rather than base your choice entirely on price and risk getting an officiant who is inflexible and may embarrass you at your wedding.

We'll book over 600 weddings this year, which means I'll speak to that many brides and grooms personally. I'm always astounded by the horror stories I hear from couples about how weddings ceremonies have been botched, mangled, bastardized or just plain not performed according to a couple's wishes. To that end, I've complied a list of the eight types of wedding officiants to watch out for.

The Clergy Wannabee
This is the wedding officiant who establishes their officiating business with the intent of ramming their own religious beliefs down the throat of the hapless couple. (Note that we are NOT referring to the priest, minister or rabbi at established places of worship.) These folks are quick to assume the title of "minister', "priestess" "chaplain" or some such pseudo-title that is generally conferred to them by obscure religious entities with names such as "the Church of Love and Light." "The Divine Life Church," "Universal Divinities of God," etc. (note that these are not actual names--to the best of my knowledge--I made them up for illustrative purposes).

While possessing credentials from one of these organizations is not a bad thing (many of Lyssabeth's officiants have similar credentialing) bear in mind that this type of licensing confers no more ability to promote oneself as a religious leader than say, graduating from a school of massage therapy. However, do not attempt to tell this to the Clergy Wannabee, who will refer to themselves as a lifetime spiritual counselor and go on ad nauseum about the blessedness of your wedding ceremony, insist that you enroll in their premarital counseling sessions and subtly coerce you into including a "spiritual" element into your ceremony that may or may not be in line with your personal beliefs. They will undoubtedly offer you subsequent services such as baby "blessings," new home "blessings," "menopause celebration rituals," funerals and divorce ceremonies.

Hint: if you've never heard of this person's "church" and they sign their emails with something akin to "love, light and blessings" before they've even met you, then you've found yourself a Wannabee.

The Closet Holy Roller

The CHR will present themselves as most open-minded and encourage you to create a ceremony that is inline with your values and preferences. Then, on the day of the wedding, they'll add some impromptu wording that pushes their own religious agenda. You'll be walking down the aisle thinking you've composed a ceremony that is contemporary, light-hearted and maybe even a tad fun and the next thing you know the CHR is talking about our lord and savior Jesus Christ to your agnostic husband to be and 50 of his Jewish relatives!

The CHR can be difficult to ferret out beforehand. It's best to get referrals and references if you have concerns that anything other than what is on your ceremony script will be coming out of the officiant's mouth on your wedding day.

The Control Freak
This is the officiant who knows best about what goes into a ceremony service and makes certain you're aware of that. You'll be presented with a few pre-written scripts and told to pick one. Or, he may meet with you for an hour and then get back to you with a pre-written ceremony written "exclusively for you." The CF will pay scant attention to any unique ideas that you might want to add, even if he gives lip service to the contrary.

There's nothing wrong with pre-written scripts for the couple that wants something short, sweet and affordable. But if you're seeking something customized, heartfelt and all about you, then drop the Control Freak and look for someone more open-minded and flexible.

The One Hit Wonder
The OHW was asked to perform her cousin's wedding ceremony, so she obtained her online ordination, pulled some words off the Internet and did a passable job of reading the ceremony. She decided she LOVES performing weddings and has subsequently put an ad on Craig's List stating she's an "affordable, experienced wedding officiant."

Hint: if the officiant charges substantially less than the going rate for your area, doesn't have an established presence with a website, listing on popular wedding sites, and is vague about how many weddings they've done, then hit the "next" button.

The Jokester
Ever the stand-up comedian, the Jokester is quite the ham and views your wedding ceremony as a place to show off their talent. True, they'll have your guests rolling in the aisles, but the emphasis may be less on you and your love and more like an episode of Who's Line is it Anyway?. While you want a talented and professional speaker who has a charismatic presence and can ad lib gracefully when something goes amiss, you don't want the focus of your ceremony to be on the officiant but on you and your sweetie.

The Mumbler
The Mumbler and his close cousins the Ummer, the Monotone Droner and the Nasally Speaker will have your guests either straining to hear or cringing in their seats. Be sure to chat with your officiant ahead of time--either in person or over the phone--to make sure their speaking voice is worthy of your big day.

The Forget-Me-Not (Not!)

The most potentially destructive of wedding officiants, the Forget Me Not (Not!) will call you by the wrong name, lose her place as she's reading the script or have your wedding date written on the wrong day in her Daytimer. The FMNN is characterized by a high level of disorganization, less-than-timely (or missed) communication and a tendency to be late for meetings. They are generally very nice people and always apologize for their mishaps, but an apology won't do you much good when it's ten minutes past showtime and your officiant is a no-show.

The High End, Busiest, most Self Important Wedding Officiant on the Planet
This guy has been officiating weddings since Grandma was a girl and tells you he's booked solid 18 months in advance. But looky there! He's just had a cancellation for your exact date and time and can squeeze you in. Subsequently, he charges substantially more than anyone else in town and makes it clear that you are lucky to have him. You'll need to decide to book him RIGHT NOW however, because otherwise the coveted spot on his calendar will be snapped up by some other lucky couple. He'll do a fine job of officiating your wedding ceremony, as long as everyone toes the line and doesn't interfere with his rigid schedule.

Did we miss anyone? Undoubtedly, but these are the stereotypes that come to our attention the most. Feel free to add your own list in the comment section. And consider yourself forewarned!

A Carolina Inn Wedding for Tracy and Jovan!

Tracy grew up in North Carolina; Jovan was born in Macedonia but grew up in California. They both attended colleges in Chicago where they met and fell in love. Jovan finished school first and landed a job in Switzerland. Shortly thereafter, Tracy went to visit him and landed herself a job there as well. So, that is where they live today. After getting engaged (a funny story we included in the ceremony), they decided to marry at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill on April 10, 2010 and so the planning began. I met with the two of them and Tracy's mother, Linda, in December to discuss their vision of their ceremony and make it happen. Via email, Tracy and Jovan and I worked hard on their special ceremony filled with their "story" and lots of their brand of humor until we had the perfect ceremony for them. The rehearsal was the day before and we got all the logistics down pat...except the ring bearer (age 2)!

Jovan's parents, Pandora and Pavle, entered as part of the processional. What a delightful couple! I so enjoyed speaking with them. They flew in from California for the big day.
Naum, our ring bearer, did not quite understand his role in this gathering of so many people from far and wide. His mother finally escorted him down the aisle so he can say years from now that he walked down the aisle at his Uncle Jovan's wedding! He was so adorable!
Enter our lovely bride flanked by her parents, Ken and Linda. After they transferred her hand into Jovan's, the ceremony began.
The Bryan Courtyard at the Carolina Inn is a wonderful setting for a wedding and I have done so many there I have lost count! The leaves on the big tree shading us was a bit skimpy on leaves for the wedding I performed here last weekend but now a week later all the green had leafed out. (Wonder what it will look like at next Saturday's wedding. I shall see and so will you all when I blog that wedding a week from now!)
We honored their parents with a Parents' Blessing. The couple read their vows to each other from my book and exchanged rings.
The couple chose to include the Wine and Chocolate Ceremony in their ceremony. The wine represents any bitterness they might encounter in the future whereas the chocolate represents all the sweetness. They partook of both the wine and the chocolate as part of their commitment to each other and their marriage.
And now the pronouncement of marriage! The big climax of the ceremony after which they get to kiss in front of everyone! Did not get a photo of Jovan and Tracy's kiss, darn!
It is time to pose for the pictures now while the guests go enjoy cocktail hour. No matter though, glasses of champagne are on the sidelines for the newlywed couple. Jovan and Tracy, it was such a delight working with you on the ceremony and then getting to tell all your guests your "love story" with all your clever humor scattered throughout. You are an amazing couple and I know you will go far together. I wish you all the best!

Our Vendors

First and foremost, the Carolina Inn where I love doing weddings and the staff is so efficient and professional. Thanks, Julie and Ashley, for handling your parts behind the scenes.
Then there is Angie Wright of Chic Details and her assistant, Debbie Wrenn, doing all the wedding planning and directing. Tracy and Jovan were so wise in choosing Angie to handle all the details, especially since they were living on another continent! It was a pleasure working with Angie again and many thanks to her for recommending me to Tracy and Jovan.
Of course this magnificent cake literally dripping with chocolate is by Donna Ford of Sweet Memories. How perfect for Jovan and Tracy!
Steve Stowe of Joe Bunn DJ Company was our very capable sound man handling the ceremony music and DJ-ing  the reception. Here we are discussing the music for the recessional and the last thing I will say in the ceremony which is his cue to start the music.

The florist for the wedding was Purple Puddle

Last but not least, Christopher Ferrer, was quietly moving around everywhere getting some great photos as usual. It was good to see you and work with you again, Chris.

Megan and Dave Wed at Campbell Lodge at Durant Park!

Megan and Dave started working on their wedding day of April 10, 2010 more than a year in advance and the lovely details of the ceremony and reception reflected their hard work. They met with me in May 2009 and hired me to officiate for them. They assembled quite a team of wedding vendors to make their special day spectacular!

Megan was escorted in part of the way by her stepfather, James.
Then her father, Clarence, escorted her the rest of the way down the aisle up to the altar.

I have done several weddings through the years at Campbell Lodge in Durant Park in Raleigh and all of them have been inside the lodge except for one that was down at the small old amphitheater in the woods. Dave and Megan figured  out a way to stage their ceremony outdoors on the side of the building underneath the deck and it worked out beautifully.
The altar area was beautifully appointed and underneath the shade of a flowering tree that shed small white petals on us during the ceremony. A nice effect thanks to Mother Nature!  We paid tribute to the couple's parents including remembering Dave's father who had passed on some time ago.
The couple's "story" was incorporated into the ceremony which everyone enjoyed hearing, some for the first time. Then Megan and Dave said their vows to each other and exchanged rings.
They each poured their sand together symbolizing their coming together in marriage, never to be separated from each other.
I always place my right hand over the couple's joined hands to make the pronouncement of marriage after which Dave broke the glass in honor of his Jewish heritage and we all shouted Mazel Tov!
Dave moves in for the kiss! I love this part of the ceremony!
The bride retrieves her bouquet and out they go...married at last! Oh happy days!
I joined the newlyweds for a quick photo before I left for the next wedding. Megan and Dave, I know you are so glad you worked so hard planning your wedding--it sure paid off with a beautiful wedding day. With your determination and your love and devotion to each other, I know you will have a great marriage! I wish you all the best life has to offer.

Our Vendors:

Lisa Jacobs was our Event Director & Wedding Planner from A Step To Gold Ballroom. She and her assistant did a fantastic job making this wedding flow smoothly. Here she is motioning the next person to come in for the processional.

Demetris, the talented 19 year old young man who heads up Creative Touch Designs is an amazing floral designer. The decorations for the ceremony and the reception were gorgeous as were the bridal bouquets and boutonnieres. I watched him as he was putting the final touches on the beautiful arch of branches and flowers flanked by huge ferns studded with flowers. The aisle was created with the purple satin runner, pedestals, flowing fabric, glass vases with twig balls, and rose petals scattered all over. The wedding colors were predominantly purple and he used a lovely purple satin runner which stayed in place quite nicely as it clung to the concrete patio floor and over the railing to block out the view of some unsightly picnic grills. Marty got a shot of him working on the table decorations inside later.
Catering was provided by Urbana Catering Concepts.

This lovely wedding cake was made by Lynn Loomis of Lynn's Traditions, one of my favorites. Too bad I could not hang around and enjoy a piece of it!

I did not get a photo of our DJ, Steve Scheidig, owner of Rotation Entertainment, Professional DJ Service. Steve was kind enough to plug my microphone into his sound system and all the guests could hear all the words of the couples custom ceremony. Thanks, Steve.

Robert of Robert F. Filcsik Photography was on hand to take the pictures to document this special day for Megan and Dave. Thanks, Robert!

Sweet Wedding for Mary and Joe at St. Mark's Chapel!

I met with Mary last October to discuss officiating her wedding to Joe. I did not meet Joe until their wedding day. They live in the DC area but chose to have their wedding in Raleigh because Mary's parents live here. Joe's parents live in South Carolina. Mary fell in love with the quaintness and charm of historic St. Mark's Chapel on the Mordecai campus in downtown Raleigh where the wedding took place at 2 PM on Saturday April 10, 2010 with an evening reception at The Umstead

Here the guests are standing for the entrance of the bride while John McHugh pumps away at the bladder of the Uilleann Pipes with his elbows to produce the wonderful Celtic music he is so well known for.
Our beautiful bride, Mary, made her entrance alone, to be met halfway down the aisle by Joe who was at the altar. Doesn't she resemble Grace Kelly?
Mary is an attorney; Joe is a chef. They met when Mary decided she did not want to be a lawyer any more and ventured into the culinary arts field. She attended chef's school in New York and if I remember her story right, she and Joe met either in school or after she graduated and was working in a restaurant.
After a while, she decided being an attorney was not so bad after all so she returned to that career but the bond between these two was very strong and was not to be severed! Mary had been married before and she knew a good man when she met Joe and was not going to let him get away! When I met Joe, it was so obvious the feeling was mutual. They are very much in love and it shows.
During the ceremony they paid tribute to their parents both of them having been married for over 50 years. I congratulate them all!
Now for the pronouncement of marriage!
I love the kiss part of the ceremony and, oh boy, was this a kiss or what! They really meant it!
The deed is done: they are married at last!
Mary and Joe, your love is so evident and it radiates from you. I know you will be so happy together and I wish you all the best in life forever and ever!

Diane with Neil Boyd Photography and her assistant were present to document this wonderful wedding. And of course John McHugh provided the fabulous music.
